Rise Above Gambling

The Troubling
Consequences of
Gambling Advertising
on Sporting Events

Our goal is to have advertising that promotes gambling banned.

Gambling advertisements pose a threat to children and young people, negatively impacting individuals with gambling addiction. In the same vein as tobacco and cannabis ads, they ought to be prohibited to safeguard vulnerable populations.

These ads target and are harmful to adolescents and vulnerable individuals.

These ads are harmful and a trigger to addicts.

The exhortation to gamble demeans the spirit of sport.

Ads normalize betting behavior in a new way for young male sports fans.

The negative consequences of gambling encompass financial difficulties, strain on families, young people, and children, mental health challenges such as addiction, and even suicide, among other documented economic and social problems that adversely impact Canadians.

Gambling advertisements, both in terms of content and frequency, hold a strong appeal for adolescents and other susceptible individuals, particularly those grappling with gambling addiction. Moreover, the encouragement to gamble undermines the essence of sportsmanship.

Should gambling ads be banned in Canada?

Achieving this goal will be challenging, considering the financial power of the gaming and sports industries, which are closely aligned in sports betting, as well as the media that profits from advertising revenue.

However, we believe that the public interest strongly supports taking action against these ads, and that gambling advertisements should be prohibited, much like tobacco and cannabis ads.
